Finding Jehovah in the New Testament
Throughout the Old Testament in the King James Version Bible, the Name of God is written as
"LORD" ( it appears in all capital letters). LORD represents or comes from the Hebrew word,
"YHWH" or "YAHWEH" or "JEHOVAH". However, the word "LORD" (YHWH - Jehovah)
does not occur in the New Testament. This is because the New Testament was written in the
Greek language rather than the Old Testament Hebrew language. The Greek language does not
have a special word which is only used of God's name as in the Hebrew language. This means
that the Hebrew word "YHWH", "YAHWEH, or "JEHOVAH" is not found in the Greek
language of the New Testament. It might seem at first glance then, that the concept of God's
Name, "JEHOVAH", was not carried over into the New Testament because of the use of two
different languages to write the two testaments.
However, "JEHOVAH", or "LORD" as written in the Old Testament IS in the New
Testament. Most New Testament publishers do not show this. All Old Testament verses which
contain LORD (JEHOVAH) in them and are quoted in New Testament passages show us that
JEHOVAH is contained within those N.T. verses, too. The New Testament uses the word
"Lord", (which means ruler in Greek, ...not God's Name-Jehovah), for the name of God. Thus
"Lord" is used for God's name in all New Testament passages which quote the Old Testament.
Consequently, whenever the KJV New Testament quotes from or refers to Old Testament
scripture passages in which the Name of God appears (LORD-Jehovah), ...the O.T. word
"LORD"(Jehovah) became "Lord" (kurios-ruler). Thus, for some, the concept of God's name
Jehovah appearing in both testaments is lost. (Some Bibles show it correctly, yours may or may
not.)
For example, when the scripture in Matthew 3:3 says, "Prepare ye the way of the Lord"), the
Holy Spirit was quoting the prophet Isaiah, verse 40:3 which says, "Prepare ye the way of the
LORD (LORD meaning Jehovah, the self-existing one....used only of God) Therefore, a slightly
different concept may result in the Greek from that originally given in the Hebrew. The word
"Lord" used in Matt. 3:3 did not come from the Hebrew word "Jehovah", but from the greek
word "kurios" which means sir, master, ruler...used of men & God. Thus, all through the New
Testament "LORD" (JEHOVAH) should appear within all the quotes and references to the Old
Testament passages which do contain "LORD" as Jehovah's name. In this light, "Jehovah" does
exist in the New Testament.
Check out your KJV Bible to see if your publisher did this for you and how consistent they
were. Some do. The following exercise shares with you some of the New Testament passages
and phrases which are of Hebrew origin. I have marked these in my Bible so I'll know where I
should be thinking "Jehovah", the name of God, rather than thinking "master, lord, sir, owner,
etc).
Listed below are the New Testament passages which quote Old Testament verses in which
"LORD" (meaning Jehovah) was used in the verse, ...rather than "Lord"- meaning master or
owner. I have given the Old Testament reference and any other parallel New Testament
references.
The bold-face word "LORD" in each example should be read "Jehovah". Try it. Reread the
New Testament passage saying "LORD" or "JEHOVAH", ....rather than "Lord" or "master".
Mark it or change it. You will find others as you do your own cross referencing.
You may highlight or note each Greek-"Lord" which was originally written to be read "LORD",
the name of God in Hebrew. I have done this in my Bible. It may help you, as it did me, to see
the continuity of the One True God across both Covenants. This exercise may help you to see
that there are not two God's, or two Jehovah's, or two Lord's....; not one of the Old and another
of the New.
This exercise also aided me in understanding that Jesus Christ of Nazareth, the son of Mary, the
Son of God, is not Jehovah Junior, but reveals the fulness of God as the express image of the
invisible God. For truly, only as we behold the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of
Jesus Christ, do we behold the Word made flesh, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father,
the Prince of Peace, the King of Israel, ....Emmanuel.... The LORD Jehovah. (John 1:14,
Isa 9:6, Matt 1:23, 2 Cor 4:6, Col 1:15, Heb1:3)
Matthew 1:20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the LORD appeared
unto him in a dream,.. Since all occurrences of the phrase "angel of the LORD" in the O.T. use
JEHOVAH, all N.T. passages using this phrase could be rendered the same...thus "angel of the
LORD-Jehovah" rather than "angel of the Lord-ruler".
Matthew 3:3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one
crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make his paths straight. (Isa. 40:3),
Mark 1:3, Luke 3:4, Matthew 4:7 Jesus said unto him, {It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt
the LORD thy God.}(Deut. 6:16), Luke 4:12
Matthew 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, {Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt
worship theLORD thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.}(Deut 6:13), Luke 4:8
Matthew 21:9 And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna
to the son of David: Blessed [is] he that cometh in thename of the LORD; Hosanna in the
highest.(Psa. 118:26), Mark 11:9
Matthew 21:42 Jesus saith unto them, {Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the
builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the LORD'S doing, and it

gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the

Since all occurrences of the phrase "Spirit of the LORD" in the O.T. use JEHOVAH, all N.T.
passages using this phrase could be rendered the same.
Luke 4:19 To preach the acceptable year of the LORD. (Isa 61:2)
John 12:38 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who
hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the LORD been revealed?(Isa 53:1)
Acts 2:20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and
notableday of the LORD come. (Joel 2:31) The phrase "day of the LORD" occurs about 20
times in the O.T. using Jehovah. Since all occurrences of the phrase "day of the LORD" in the
O.T. use JEHOVAH, all N.T. passages using this phrase could be rendered the same.
Acts 2:21 And it shall come to pass, [that] whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD
shall be saved. (Joel 2:32), Rom 10:13
Acts 2:25 For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the LORD always before my face, for
he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:(Psa 16:8)
Acts 3:22 For Moses truly said unto the fathers, A prophet shall the LORD your God raise up
unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall say
unto you.(Deut 18:15)
Acts 4:26 The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the
LORD, and against his Christ.(Psa 2:1)
Acts 15:17 That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom
my name is called, saith the LORD, who doeth all these things.(Amos 9:11)
Romans 4:8 Blessed [is] the man to whom the LORD, will not impute sin.(Psa 32:2)
Romans 9:29 And as Esaias said before, Except the LORD of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we
had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha.(Isa 1:9)
Romans 15:11 And again, Praise the LORD, all ye Gentiles; and laud him, all ye people.(Psa
117:1)
(the phrase "Praise the LORD" (Jehovah) is used about 65 times in the O.T. using Jehovah.
Since all occurrences of the phrase "Praise the LORD" in the O.T. use JEHOVAH, all N.T.
passages using this phrase could be rendered the same.
I Corinthians 1:31 That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the LORD.
(Jer 9:24)
I Corinthians 2:16 For who hath known the mind of the LORD, that he may instruct him? (Isa
40:13)
I Corinthians 3:20 And again, The LORD knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.
(Psa 94:11)
1 Corinthians 10:28 ....for the earth is the LORD'S and the fulness thereof: (Psalms 24:1)
Hebrews 7:21 (For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that
said unto him, The LORD sware and will not repent, Thou [art] a priest for ever after the order
of Melchisedec:) (Psa 110:4)
Hebrews 8:8 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the LORD,
when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: (Jer
31:31)
Hebrews 8:9 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I
took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my

Hebrews 10:30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance [belongeth] unto me, I will
recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The LORD shall judge his people. (Deut 32:36)
Hebrews 12:5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children,
My son, despise not thou the chastening of the LORD, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:

Hebrews 12:6 For whom the LORD loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he
receiveth. (Prov 3:12)
James 5:10 Take, my brethern, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the LORD.... The
phrase "name of the LORD" (Jehovah) occurs about 84 times in the O.T. Since all occurrences
of the phrase "name of the LORD" in the O.T. use JEHOVAH, all N.T. passages using this
phrase could be rendered the same.
1 Peter 1:25 But the word of the LORD endureth for ever... The phrase occurs numerous times
in the O.T. and always uses LORD (Jehovah). Acts 13:48,49, 1Thes 1:8, 2Thes 3:1 Since all
occurrences of the phrase "word of the LORD" in the O.T. use JEHOVAH, all N.T. passages
using this phrase could be rendered the same.
PASSING THE GOD TEST
During different periods of time and cultures, various personages have stood up and
proclaimed themselves to be God, deity, and worthy of Worship. If we were to give them a
test, I wonder how many could pass the test, ......a God Test, ......a Deity Test.
The scriptures reveal different characteristics, attributes, and identifying marks of the
Deity of Jehovah God, creator of heaven and earth, ....the God of Abraham, Isaac, and
Jacob. Using these criteria to make a test should make it ever so plain that only one
individual, that only one man, has all the credentials and earmarks to pass THE GOD
TEST; ...... He is Jesus Christ of Nazareth, a man approved of God who was anointed
with the Holy Ghost and Power. None else! Jesus has demonstrated in the holy scriptures
that he alone passes THE GOD TEST. See for yourself.
QUESTION #1: Job 9:8 says that.. (God) alone spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth
upon the waves of the sea. Can you name any individual in scripture who ever tread or
walked upon the waves of the sea? Yes! ...Jesus Christ, ...Matthew14:25
QUESTION #2: In Psalms 107:29 it says .. the LORD (Jehovah)....He maketh the storm a calm,
so that the waves thereof are still. Can you name any individual in scripture who ever made
the waves of a stormy sea to become calm and peaceable? Yes! ....Jesus Christ, ...Matthew

QUESTION #3: Psalms 107:20 says .. the LORD (Jehovah) ...He sent his word and healed
them. Can you name any individual in scripture who ever sent his word and his word
healed? Yes! ....Jesus Christ, ...Matthew 8:8,13
QUESTION #4: In Isaiah 35:4,5 it says .. behold your God will come with vengeance, even
God (Elohim) with a recompence; he will come and save you. Then the eyes of the blind shall
be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as a hart,
and the tongue of the dumb sing. Can you name any individual in scripture who ever
opened the eyes of the blind, caused the deaf hear, caused the lame to leap, and the
tongue of the mute to sing? Yes! ....Jesus Christ, ...Matthew 11:4,5
QUESTION #5: Isaiah 40:25 says .. To whom will ye liken me, or shall I be equal? saith«):»
theHolyOne. Can you name any individual in scripture who has ever been spoken of as
being equal to God? Yes! ....Jesus Christ, ....Phillipians 2:6
QUESTION #6: In Isaiah 43:25 it says that...I (LORD,Jehovah), even I, am he that blotteth
out thy transgressions. Can you name any individual in scripture who ever claimed the
ability to blot out or forgive sins? Yes! ....Jesus Christ, ...Luke 5:20,21
QUESTION #7: Isaiah 44:6 says ...Thus saith the LORD (Jehovah) the King of Israel,...I am
the first and I am the last. Can you name any individual in scripture who ever called
himself the first and the last? Yes! ....Jesus Christ, ...Revelation 1:17,18;2:18
QUESTION #8: In Exodus 3:14 it says ...And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he
said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. Can you
name any individual in scripture who ever called himself I AM? YES! ....Jesus Christ,

QUESTION #9: Zechariah 12:10 says ...and they shall look upon me (I, LORD(Jehovah)
whom they have pierced and shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son. Can you
name any individual in the scriptures who was pierced, stabbed, thrust through or
wounded? Yes! ....Jesus Christ, ...Matthew 27:35, John 19:34
QUESTION #10: In Psalms 23:1 it says ... The LORD (Jehovah) is my shephard. Can you
name any individual in scripture who ever called himself the shephard of God's people?
Yes! ....Jesus Christ, ...John 10:11, Hebrews 13:20
QUESTION #11: Isaiah 45:23 says ... That unto ME (Elohim, Jehovah) every knee shall bow,
every tongue shall swear. Can you name any individual in scripture to whom every knee
shall bow and every tongue shall confess ?Yes! ....Jesus Christ, ...Romans 14:11, Phillipians
2:10-11 (Thus the O.T. name "Jehovah" is equated with the N.T. name "Jesus"! This gives the
Father His Glory!)
QUESTION #12: Was any individual in scripture titled or called by names of both man
and diety ? Yes! It was the child, the little boy born in Isaiah 9:6, who was both called, ..."a
son, ...a child, ...wonderful, ...counselor, ...the prince of peace, and yet also called ....The
Mighty God, and The Everlasting Father." (The angel of Matthew 1:23 said that the child Jesus
would also be called Emmanuel, ....God with us!)
Jesus Christ of Nazareth
is the only man who has ever been able
to pass the God Test!
The preceding study should in no way be interpreted that we are saying that our Lord Jesus
Christ was not a man, with his own separate will and personality from that of the Father.
Jesus said as much of himself in John 5:30, ..."I can of myself do nothing. ...."I seek not
mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me."
For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our
hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus
Christ. (2 Cor 4:6)
